Crested Butte

We started on a Sunday and drove to Farmington, NM. (don't try to eat there on a Sunday night... It is a near-impossibility). The next day we drove through Southwestern Colorado. BEAUTIFUL!! What I wouldn't give to live there!!

The end of the drive was Crested Butte, CO... 9,000 feet of heaven.

We were there for our 10th anniversary. This is my beautiful bride and me after our celebratory dinner at The Timberline.

The food was pretty good... It was our last night there. You can't tell, but I have been suffering from a major cold + allergies since Farmington.

We took a hike on the 21st past Peanut Lake and Big Mine. This is the view back towards Mt. Crested Butte across Peanut Lake. On the road/trail there was an old concrete structure that we assume was used for transporting the coal to the ovens and carts.

We went for a hike in the morning, but decided on a long drive instead. We stopped at this turnoff where we saw these Aspens that had been carved on for years. Names and dates as far back as the 60's were present.

I've always liked the way Aspen groves look--symmetrical lines of white interrupted by dark knot holes and green wisps of leaves and grass.

Near Crested Butte is Gothic and the home of the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab. The wife worked there in '84 and '87. It was established in 1928. Some of the cabins and buildings there were built in the 1880's. It is truly a gorgeous up there, and the name Gothic is just too cool.

Our home base was the Grand Lodge. Nice, but definitely set up for the skiers. Our room was a disabled room and was set up funky (by code, of course).

If we could afford it, we would live here... but with the smallest of homes hovering around $1,000,000, it looks like something out of reach...

The point is this: This place is heaven
